Positive Communication helps!

As we get to that trickier time of year when things get more stressful, a little reminder of how much of an impact your positive words can have on students and on your own feelings. A big thank you to the specialists for doing this. It is clearly having a big impact on kids in a great way!

"My name is Julie Driggers and I am the art specialist at Green Hope Elementary.  I also am the "Carpool Queen" at GHE and I'm outside every day in the afternoons.  The specialists have decided to start a program this year called, Weekly Brag.  We each take a grade level and select 5 students a week to brag on by sending an email to the parents.  In a world where it sometimes feels like the focus is on the negative, we want to make sure parents know about all the positive that is going on! "

"Today, I want to brag about Gregory! He is such a delight to have in art class!  He is a good listener and follows directions and is always anxious to please.  He seems to really like art class and that always makes me happy!  We're happy to have him at GHE!"

Parent Response:
"Thank you for this wonderful "brag" about Gregory.  He comes home bursting from school and is absolutely LOVING it.  There is a marked change in his approach to art since beginning kindergarten--he used to be rarely interested in it and often would choose any other activity.  Now he comes home every day, delighted to show us his latest piece of artwork, loves to describe how art is made up of other things ("Mom, did you know that a person is made up of different shapes? If I draw all those shapes then I draw something better than a stick figure!?"), and is now asking for more art supplies.

It is truly a joy to see--thank you for all you've done to spark this in him and for all you do for GHE!"

  2. Lol, that pumpkin, though! So true about the positive notes! I had a "challenging student" that was struggling to follow classroom rules and I made the extra effort to praise all the good that student was doing and "brag" to his mom. You should have seen the smile on his mom's face (and the student!). :D
